"The Entire Prince in One Hour"

RIP... Purple One!

Braddy Daddy hat auch etwas geschrieben: Two Bad
Westlake Studio D
Hollywood, CA
1986-1987
The story of the song "Bad" being a duet with Prince is likely well-known among MJ and Prince fans, but let me briefly share my version.
>>Truth Alert<<
Before I tell the story, I must humbly admit that I was not in the studio the day Prince came for a visit. I don't know where I was or why I wasn't there that day, but for whatever reason I missed the visit. I saw Prince again a couple years later at the Warner Film Studios, but I never had the privilege of meeting him. So, let me briefly tell the story, keeping in mind I wasn't there for the final scene.
Michael and Quincy had wanted to do a duet with Prince, and it was discussed many times in the studio. The song was originally recorded at Havenhurst (Michael's home studio), and it was in pretty good shape when Quincy and Bruce took over the project.
Quincy has stated that he envisioned the fight scene in the short film featuring these two incredible musical rivals (yet friends) tearing it up with the choreography.
The word "Duet" was all over the original track sheets and tape boxes. In fact, it sort of became known as the "Pee Duet". No, that is not a mis-spelling; some of the work tapes and early mixes were called "Pee Duet".
I seem to remember that as part of our security measures very few people were to know that Michael was talking with Prince about doing the duet, so spelling it "Pee" might really throw a curious guest into a quandary. Hey, this was way before Twitter and smart-phones, so our security measures were a bit more unorthodox.
Anyway, the tracks were prepped, and Prince finally came to listen to the song. (Again - I am working on a Taco Bell commercial or eating an In-N-Out burger this particular day.) I'm sure Michael played it for him at 122db spl, and I'm sure the room was rocking. I'm sure they got along swimmingly and I'm sure it was a very memorable day for everyone there.
After the playback, Prince looked at Michael and said something like, "This song is strong enough on it's own, it doesn't need me." There have been other speculations about Prince not liking the lyric "Your butt is mine", but I can't say for sure.
I CAN say that when I finally did get back into the studio later that day everyone was very excited about Prince's visit, and how cool he was to be around.
The musical rivalry between Prince and Michael was legendary, and their individual talents were extraordinary. Two seasoned pros at the peak of their game.
Very unexpected side-note number one: The large speakers that Westlake Studios installs in studios around the world were hand-tuned for many years by Glenn Phoenix, my former boss. I have sat with Glenn for hours learning how he tunes his speakers, and there were two artists that he used many time as reference recordings: Donald Fagen and Prince. Glenn explained to me one evening that some of Prince's recordings, in his opinion, were as pristine with such a wide variety of sounds as anything he had ever heard.
Unexpected side-note number two: I did wind up working with Susan Rogers, Prince's brilliant engineer of Purple Rain, on a project for a couple weeks. She was one of the coolest, kindest people I have worked with, and I figured out very quickly why Prince loved working with her so much. Her creative approach to mixing was so casual and natural, an amazing pro. And for Prince to use a remarkably talented female engineer in the male-dominated world of recording studios was a statement in itself, in my opinion.
I wore my vinyl of Purple Rain out. Then I bought the CD maybe 3 times. We even had the laser disc of the movie at Westlake!
A series of near-misses and close encounters. It would have been a pleasure to meet him in person, but I remain - like many of you - just a fan. He created a sound all his own and did music his way.
With tremendous respect and admiration - rest in peace, Prince. Your legacy and music will remain to remind us how incredibly gifted you were.
